Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • We only publish original and unpublished articles. The authors guarantee originality and the absence of plagiarism, including self-plagiarism. They also guarantee that the manuscript does not violate the copyrights of third parties.
  • Text does not contain defamatory material, illicit, obscene, unlawful, invasive of privacy, hateful, xenophobic or ethically objectionable, threatening or contempt of Law.
  • The file will be sent in Microsoft Word, RTF or Open Office File format.
    Manuscripts in PDF format are not accepted.
  • The length of the article is between 5,000 and 8,000 words (abstracts, keywords and bibliography are excluded from this calculation). In case of reviews, the length is between 800 and 1,500 words.
  • The text meets APA bibliographic requirements and there are no references in the bibliography that are not cited in the text.
  • The document is free of data that identifies the author and co-authors to ensure an anonymous evaluation of the article.

Author Guidelines

Cost of publication: 750€ +21%IVA (TAX) (907'50€) only in case the article is accepted. It includes publication in Open Access with a license CC BY ND.

General Requirements

  • Authors should ensure the accuracy of the quotes, charts, tables and maps.
  • Refrain from including irrelevant images and graphics in the article.
  • Keywords are very important for search engine positioning. To achieve a better dissemination of the work, please make sure your keywords are clear an precise.
  • The funding agency(ies) must be indicated, indicating the reference(s) of the project(s) in the framework of which the research that has given rise to the publication of the article has been carried out. This information should be referenced by the authors in the acknowledgements in the article. 
  • VISUAL Review requires authors to be identified in ORCID to standardize the citation of their publications.
  • The order of signatures/affiliation in the article should reflect the effort and contribution.

Format Requirements

  • Graphics and images should be clear and easy to see. We cannot improve the quality of images.
  • All images, graphics and tables must be accompanied by a title and a source.
  • All images, graphics and tables should be placed where they will appear in the text.
  • Avoid using advanced functions of Word, such as drawing objects or automatic tables of contents and indexes.

Bibliographic References

The citation style chosen by this journal is the APA’s (American Psychological Association).The references in the text must follow an abbreviated format (Author, Year: pp.). The full reference list shall appear at the end of the article. Preferably include references from the last five years; It will increase the article possibilities of acceptance by the reviewers. Efforts should be made to minimize the number of footnotes.

Whenever possible, include the DOI for each article in the bibliographic list. Authors can use a citation generator of APA style to adapt their bibliography to APA 7th edition as the one in the following link: https://www.scribbr.com/citation/generator/

The author may decide the section REFERENCES distribution in several sections, with bibliographics references criteria different from the general ones: for example, including a webography or a primary sources list, without necessarily following the order of these instructions.

Editorial Quality

  • The peer review process is rigorous in order to ensure the quality of the content published in the journal. We expect the authors to revise their texts following the suggestions of the reviewers. If the authors do not perform such reviews and do not submit comments back, the manuscript will be definitely rejected.
  • Some manuscripts may be of excellent quality, but be poorly written in English. This may be the case for authors whose native language is not English. In this case, we could request the authors to re-write the article completely, independent of the final punctuation the article may have obtained. We have an editorial service that can be hired by the authors to improve the writing expression of the article.
  • The submitted originals make appropriate use of inclusive language according to the Report of the Royal Spanish Academy on inclusive language: https://www.rae.es/sites/default/files/Informe_lenguaje_inclusivo.pdf.

Those authors who publish in this journal accept the following terms:

  1. Authors retain copyright.

VISUAL REVIEW. International Visual Culture Review / Revista Internacional de Cultura Visual, in compliance with current regulations on the protection of personal data, informs users that the personal data collected through the forms available on the website https://visualreview.net/revVISUAL/ will be processed for the purpose of managing the editorial services of the academic journal.

The personal data provided by users may be processed for the maintenance of the editorial, administrative, and communication relationship with authors, reviewers, readers, and other users of the platform, as well as for the management of submissions, peer review, editing, publication of articles, handling of enquiries, delivery of requested information, and other activities inherent to the journal.

Personal data will only be disclosed to third parties when necessary for the fulfilment of the purposes described above, for the proper provision of editorial services, or when required by law.

VISUAL REVIEW adopts the necessary technical and organisational measures to ensure the security, integrity, availability, and confidentiality of personal data, in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 —General Data Protection Regulation— and Spanish Organic Law 3/2018 of 5 December on Personal Data Protection and Guarantee of Digital Rights.

Users may exercise their rights of access, rectification, erasure, objection, restriction of processing, and data portability at any time, under the terms established by the applicable regulations. Purpose of the processing of personal data

For what purpose will we process your personal data?

VISUAL REVIEW will process the personal data collected through the website https://visualreview.net/revVISUAL/ for the following purposes:

  1. To manage user registration on the journal’s editorial platform.

  2. To respond to requests for information received through the forms and contact channels made available.

  3. To manage the submission, reception, review, editing, publication and archiving of academic manuscripts.

  4. To maintain editorial communication with authors, reviewers, editors, readers and other persons involved in the journal’s processes.

  5. To send information related to the editorial activity of VISUAL REVIEW, including notices, calls for papers, news, newsletters or communications related to the journal.

Users may object to the sending of informative or promotional communications by any means and at any time by sending an email to the address indicated above.

The fields marked as mandatory in the forms must be completed. If such data are not provided, or are provided incompletely or incorrectly, it will not be possible to properly handle the request, manage the registration or process the corresponding editorial services.

Retention of personal data

The personal data provided will be retained for as long as the editorial, administrative or communication relationship with the user remains in force, unless erasure is requested, and for the legally required periods during which liabilities may arise from the services provided.

In the case of data linked to editorial processes, peer review, publication, academic archiving, authorship traceability, review processes or the preservation of research integrity, such data may be retained for as long as necessary to ensure compliance with the journal’s editorial, ethical, legal and documentary obligations.

Legal basis

The processing of personal data is carried out on the following legal bases:

  1. The user’s freely given, specific, informed and unambiguous consent, granted through acceptance of this privacy policy or by means of a clear affirmative action, such as ticking a box provided for that purpose.

  2. The performance of the editorial or pre-contractual relationship arising from registration on the platform, manuscript submission, participation in review processes or requests for information addressed to the journal.

  3. Compliance with legal obligations applicable to the journal and to its publishing entity.

  4. The legitimate interest of VISUAL REVIEW in managing its editorial processes, preserving research integrity, ensuring the traceability of review and publication procedures, and communicating with persons involved in the journal’s academic activity.

If the user does not provide the requested data, or provides them incorrectly or incompletely, it will not be possible to properly respond to the request, manage participation in the platform or process the corresponding editorial services.

Recipients

Personal data will not be disclosed to third parties outside VISUAL REVIEW unless this is necessary for the provision of editorial services, the technical operation of the platform, compliance with legal obligations or when the data subject has given express consent.

Within the framework of editorial activity, certain personal data may be accessed by persons or entities involved in the management of the journal, manuscript review, editing, layout, indexing, digital preservation, technical support for the platform or administrative management, always within the limits necessary for the fulfilment of the purposes indicated.

Data provided by users of the services

Where users upload files or documents containing personal data of third parties to the platform or to servers linked to the editorial service, it shall be the user’s responsibility to ensure that they have the necessary legal basis for such processing and disclosure.

VISUAL REVIEW shall not be held responsible for users’ failure to comply with data protection regulations when they incorporate, transmit or publish personal data of third parties without due authorisation or without a sufficient legal basis.

Data retention in accordance with the LSSI

VISUAL REVIEW informs users that, where applicable, and as a provider or user of information society services, it may retain the information strictly necessary to identify the origin of hosted data and the moment at which the provision of the service began, in accordance with Spanish Law 34/2002 of 11 July on Information Society Services and Electronic Commerce.

The retention of such data shall not affect the secrecy of communications and such data may only be used in the context of a legally admissible investigation, for the safeguarding of public security, or when required by judges, courts, the Public Prosecutor’s Office or competent authorities.

The disclosure of data to State Security Forces and Corps shall be carried out in accordance with the applicable regulations on personal data protection.

Intellectual property of hosted content

The use of VISUAL REVIEW’s services in a manner contrary to intellectual property legislation or to the rights of third parties is prohibited. In particular, the following are prohibited:

• The use of the platform or the journal’s services for purposes contrary to applicable Spanish, European or international law.

• The publication, transmission or submission of content that is unlawful, violent, obscene, abusive, discriminatory, xenophobic, defamatory or contrary to the ethical principles of academic publishing.

• The publication or transmission of content that infringes intellectual property rights, copyright, image rights, moral rights or any other legitimate rights of third parties.

• The collection or use of personal data of other users without their express consent or without a sufficient legal basis, in breach of Regulation (EU) 2016/679 and Spanish Organic Law 3/2018.

• The use of the domain, platform or email addresses linked to VISUAL REVIEW for the sending of unsolicited bulk communications.

The user shall be responsible for the content submitted, hosted, published or transmitted through the platform, as well as for the information, documents, links, statements, images, files or materials included in their submissions.

Third-party rights and protection of minors

The user shall be responsible for complying with the regulations in force regarding copyright, intellectual property, data protection, image rights, protection of minors, honour, privacy, public order and all other principles applicable to the use of the Internet and to academic editorial activity.

The user must ensure that they hold the necessary authorisations, consents or legal bases to include in their manuscripts, files or communications any personal data, images, testimonies, interviews, third-party materials or any other content subject to legal protection.

The user shall indemnify VISUAL REVIEW against any damages, losses, expenses, claims, sanctions, fees or legal defence costs that may arise from improper use of the platform or from the inclusion of content for which responsibility is attributable to the user.

Protection of hosted information

VISUAL REVIEW may make backup copies of the content hosted on its systems or on platforms linked to editorial management. However, it shall not be responsible for the loss, deletion or accidental modification of data or documents attributable to users.

The journal does not guarantee the full restoration of data deleted by users, since such data may have been deleted, modified or replaced during the time elapsed since the last available backup copy.

The journal’s ordinary services do not necessarily include the recovery of content deleted for reasons attributable to the user. Where such recovery is technically possible, it may be subject to the conditions, deadlines and costs previously established.

The restoration of data or documents shall only be included when the loss of content is directly attributable to VISUAL REVIEW or to the systems under its responsibility.

Commercial and informative communications

In accordance with Spanish Law 34/2002 of 11 July on Information Society Services and Electronic Commerce, VISUAL REVIEW shall not send advertising or promotional communications by email or other equivalent means of electronic communication unless they have been previously requested or expressly authorised by their recipients.

Where there is a prior relationship with the user, VISUAL REVIEW may send communications related to the editorial, scientific or academic activity of the journal, provided that they are connected with the services, calls, processes or activities of the publication.

In all cases, users may request at any time that no further information be sent to them by electronic means, by contacting the channels made available by the journal.
